Techcrunch writes about them now... F’dCompany.com will get them later.
Haha, well at least I thought it was funny... but if you don’t get it, here is what I’m talking about...
F’dCompany.com (my mom reads my blog, so I try not to cuss) is a web site I used to follow religiously right after the dot-com bust when companies were either laying people off or going out of business left and right. I even read the author's book book a few weeks ago. Those were the good old days when dot-com businesses were sprouting faster than weeds… no business models, but really cool technologies. The fun lasted for a while, but as we all know, it ended abruptly and lots of people lost lots of money.
Fast forward to the present... really cool technologies like RSS, blogging and tagging (which I still can’t figure out by the way) as well as new development frameworks like Ajax and Ruby on Rails are creating quite a hysteria in what a lot of people are calling Web 2.0.
Well, I don’t know about you, but some of this hysteria is making me feel like its 1999 again. Granted, I’m very bullish on all of the cool technologies (except for tagging) and web development frameworks I just mentioned, but it seems like everyday I’m reading about more and more “really cool” companies with no business model whatsoever. If you want a little taste of what I’m talking about, check out TechCrunch.com (I subscribe to their blog—its a great daily read). These guys are doing an awesome job of tracking Web 2.0 and keeping us informed of all the new stuff that’s launching everyday. To be fair, many of the companies they track are well established (like whenever Google or Skype launch something, they’re one of the first to cover it) and some are not household names but do have REAL business models (hopefully they’ll cover us one day)—but so many of them look like they’re headed for the dot-com deadpool. Only time will tell.
Thank you very much, Pat. And yes, I am getting to webmail. :-) Let's talk next week.
