Moving into 2006 we're looking to recruit two salespeople in our small business sales division. We’re looking for extremely driven people that want to kick off their career or take it to the next level with a young and exciting company. Here is a job description, if you're interested in taking a look.
Moving beyond the job description though, I thought I’d take a minute to type out some of the things I’m really looking for in candidates. Here goes:
• I’m looking for great learners. I care much more about what you’re going to do here than what you’ve done in the past. In order to succeed at Webmail, you’ve got to constantly strive to learn more. If you want to join our sales team, get used to lots of reading and a ton of very hands on training.
• I’m looking for hard workers. We’re a young technology company. We don’t run a 9-5 environment. If you want to be successful here in sales, get used to long hours.
• I’m looking for very driven salespeople. I want people that need to close that next sale—all day, every day.
• I’m looking for solid writers. We communicate a lot via email.
• I’m looking for transactional salespeople. We do a lot of volume in our small business sales division. You might close 20 orders in one day.
• I’m looking for ethical salespeople. I think this one goes without saying.
• I’m looking to help you become a different kind of salesperson. Everyone hates salespeople. Stop being like the people we all hate.
• I’m looking for great listeners. If you interrupt me, you won’t get the job.
• I’m looking for competitive salespeople. If you don’t want to be our top salesperson, don’t apply.
Experience always helps, but it’s not a requirement. In fact, we’ve done an awesome job of taking relatively inexperienced people and turning them into really effective sales reps.
In case you’re wondering, we currently don’t have a VP of Sales. So for a while at least, salespeople will get to work with yours truly. If you’re wondering about my sales background, here goes... I’ve got about eight years under my belt now. I started out in retail (Best Buy and Sears), I sold books door-to-door in Southwest Virginia (have you ever had a cow shit on your car while you're trying to make a cold call?) and I’ve essentially served as VP of Sales (in addition to my little job as CEO) for Webmail for the last three years (before that, we didn’t really have much to sell). Additionally, I’ve read 20+ sales books and I spent a year in sales training with the Sandler Sales Institute in Maryland.
We run a pretty demanding environment, but not without reward. The pay is competitive, the benefits are good, the atmosphere is awesome, and we’ve got lots of cool perks all over the place. More than anything, I think we provide people with an awesome opportunity to learn and advance their careers.
